April 22nd is only a few days away, which means it’s time to celebrate Earth Day!  The celebration that once started as just a small group of scientists and environmentalists back in the 60’s, is now a huge mainstream event.

Here in San Diego, the annual Earth Fair in Balboa Park listed hundreds of Corporate, Government, and non profit entities as official sponsors. It’s an amazing sight to see groups like Activist San Diego supporting the same event with huge mega corporations like Walmart. Some people may say the fair has sold out. We say it has become more inclusive and is reaching and educating more people than ever.

So how does one celebrate a holiday like Earth Day? You could go solar, buy an electric car, or maybe install a rainwater collection system in your garden. What’s that you say? You want to save the bees? You could always install a beehive on your property!

But what about those of us who can’t go big? Not all of us have the time, money, or space to keep bees on our properties. Napoleon Hill once said “If you can’t do great things, do small things in a great way”

With the spirit of that great quote in mind, here are a couple of small things you can do to help out the native bee population here in San Diego:

1. Plant some drought tolerant and bee friendly plants in your garden.

Don’t have a garden? Put a potted plant outside next to your apartment or house. Here’s a short list of plants that bees love, require little water, and grow well in San Diego: Sage, Rosemary, Lavender, Bougainvillea, and Lantana.

2. Make a Bee Feeder/Water dish for wild honeybees.

So you cant keep bees on your property but you still want to help out. No problem! Make a Bee Feeder. We got this tip from waldeneffect.org. It’s so easy to do. Just take a shallow bowl and add some rocks or marbles. Add water to fill in just below the top layer of marbles and voila…and instant bee feeder.

Rocks: Looking lovely
(even kitty thinks so).

Marbles: Bees will love
it as much as this cat

So there you go. Two super easy and cheap ways to support the local bee population. As always, be sure to remember that if a swarm or hive lands on your property, call a bee removal specialist who will remove them humanely. We here at Bee Best Bee Removal can help you by removing the bees live, whenever it is safe to do so. Just give us a call (619)464-2057.

Now that we’ve seen some small ways to help bees, check out this great way we spent the past weekend helping the bees.

Above is a video of Jeff The Bee Whisperer Lutz helping out Quentin Alexander of Hive Savers. The footage was captured out at the James Macdonald Bee Ranch in Encinitas.  The footage shows Quentin relocating a large beehive that was removed from a fence earlier that day.
